A lie can only go on so long before the truth is revealed. “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” Jesus told the Jews who had believed him, John 8:32. As my mom always states “The truth will set you free” This is her ultimate motto for every situation and problem. In adolescence and early adulthood hearing that statement would frustrate me even more when I was already down and out about being lied to. Now that I have some experience under my belt, I greatly appreciate this message; knowing that the awareness of truth is a pivotal moment in any circumstance that is confusing or difficult to handle. Allow me to expound on this discovery. As I said before, I did not want to hear the truth, and in the words of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men “You can’t handle the truth” and another cliché that can explain it is “The truth hurts”. In actuality, it’s not the truth that hurts us; you are feeling the pain from the lies as they are revealed. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. All truth is found in Jesus, as He stated He is the Truth! If you know Jesus Christ, then you know he is not the source of pain. Just like a flashlight providing light for you in darkness, His light reveals the truth. Lies and deception is the darkness, and when you believe them you are blind to the truth. Now that you know where truth comes from, where do lies and darkness come from? Jesus also gives us this answer in His Word “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44. The devil is the originator of lies, he is a deceiver and manipulator, so all states of confusion is designed by him.
Let me provide an example of a situation you may have experienced or could understand this message given this problem: You are a first time car buyer, and you are in the market to purchase a brand new car. Every time you turn on the television or look at billboards, you see advertisements about various vehicles. You are getting more enthused about purchasing a vehicle. The desire has increased as you see the advertised vehicles on the road and envision yourself driving a particular vehicle. Now that you have your mind set on which vehicle you would like to purchase based on hearing all the great features and capabilities, you go to the dealership to see it for yourself, and give it a test drive. You go inside and you already know based on what everyone has told you, to be careful about what the car salesman tells you. They have been known to take advantage of first time car buyers. Now the car salesman knows the pros and cons of their vehicles, but they only share with you the pros. As you test drive the vehicle, the salesman has their commission in mind. They tell you all about the great features and compare them to other vehicles you may have considered that are not on their lot. This particular salesman tells you that the vehicle you are driving will meet all of your needs that you wanted in a vehicle. They are also willing to give you an extended warranty and reduce the price just below the price of the competitive vehicles. You are overjoyed with the news and decide to purchase the vehicle. After six years, you are still satisfied with the vehicle, until one day your vehicle starts stalling and shuts off. When you have the vehicle repaired, the service man states the repairs are costly and the damage occurs in all of the same models around the same time. Your warranty has just expired three months prior to the incident. You did not renew the warranty, because your vehicle is paid off and never had any major maintenance issues. The salesman is still working at the dealership, and you speak to them about the problems you are having with the vehicle. The salesman acknowledges this problem is common with the particular vehicle you purchased, and it’s unfortunate, but if you are looking for a new vehicle without these issues they could assist you. The salesman knew this about the vehicle when you purchased it, but left out the cons so they could sale the vehicle to you and receive their commission. The salesman did not lie, but leaving out all of the facts for their advantage is deception. After doing some research you realize this was the case in older models as well, and now you feel conned. You also review the facts about the other vehicle you were interested in and compare them to your vehicle. The results show the competitive vehicle had less maintenance issues in the long run than the vehicle you purchased. Now that you have all the facts, you can make a better choice about the next steps you will take.
Dealing with lies in relationships can be damaging and harder to face, than dealing with material things. The steps taken to work through them are the same. If you seek the truth, the clearer things will be to make the right decisions. Pains from lies are inevitable, but you don’t have to remain there. The truth can turn things around and the truth will heal you from past pains. You will be set free, just look towards the light!
