I tried to write a piece that would capture the hurt and pain of a woman whose love was not appreciated by the man she loved. I started it, but could not finish. I changed my mind after releasing pinned up thoughts of my own, and of other women who have undergone the same. I began to feel it was unnecessary to put my energy on something that was not meant to be. As a woman scorned, you go through all kinds of emotions to get to the truth. Hurt and anger resonated as I was typing the words out; almost rehearsing the things I’ve been through in the past. It was quite comical when I read it back to myself.
What made me stop was the voice of truth and hope, the Holy Spirit. Every person is worthy in God’s eyes. When someone does not value you, it does not bring down your worth, they just don’t appreciate you and that is their loss. Let me provide this example in a short story I created:
One day a man walks down the street and sees a penny glistening on the ground. He picks it up and put it in his pocket, thinking this penny will provide him luck. He goes about his day. He interviews for a job that morning, and on the spot he is offered the position. All of his encounters with people were positive on that day, receiving smiles and acts of kindness from even complete strangers. At the end of the day, he thinks, wow this penny is lucky! The next day he puts the same penny back in his pocket. He misses the train in the morning and is late to work on his first day. He spills coffee on his shirt, and sits through his first meeting with a stain and the shame of his tardiness. His supervisor warns him, to be punctual for the remainder of his probation. As he goes about his day, his exchanges with people are brisk and abrupt. As he walks home, he throws the penny in frustration and thinks about the money that is promised from his job instead.
Another man walks down the street and spots the same penny glistening in the moonlight. When he picks it up, he examines it; this is no ordinary penny he thought. The next morning the man brings the penny to a local coin dealer to have it appraised. The coin dealer placed it under his magnifier. He nearly fainted once he realized it was an authentic 1969-S Lincoln Cent with a double die obverse. He showed the man the approximate value of the coin. The coin dealer offered the man $30,000 for the penny. The man smiled and asked for the coin back. He immediately left the dealer and went to the bank. He took out some money and headed to the airport. Once he landed, he took a taxi to his old house. He knocked on the door, and asked the mother of his child if he can have a moment with his daughter. He hadn’t seen her in three years. He placed the coin in his daughter’s hand and stated “I know I haven’t been the best father, but I always think about you. I want you to have this penny. It’s worth a lot of money, but your worth much more. I want you to protect this penny and don’t let anyone see it or take it from you. When you are older, the penny will be worth more money and you can do with it as you please. I love you and I wanted to give you something that would express my love for you.”
I’m going to end the story right there. The first man did not know the value of what he had and so he tossed it. The man, who did know the value, gave it away as a token of love. He could have kept it for himself, but he allowed his most precious gift to have it. When we fall in love, we cannot control the actions of the person we are in love with. They may not see our value, but that doesn’t mean our value depreciates. Two people may form a relationship at a moment in time, but find themselves separated because they were headed in two different directions. The person that was mostly invested in the relationship may try to hold on to the person, or want them to go in the same direction. If a person is willing to let you go, let them go! They will never reap the benefits of your worth, because they don’t know your value. For any woman or man who may find themselves in this predicament, continue on the direction you are going in. Learn to appreciate who you are and what gifts God has blessed you with. One day you’ll look up and the love of your life will see you glistening on the same path they are on, headed in the same direction you are going in.
