Ever hear yourself saying these words “I need a vacation.” Especially when your life seems like it’s in whirlwind, with problems circulating all around you. Even if you are able to go on a vacation whenever you want to; you may go to digress, relax, and enjoy your new surroundings. Upon your return you may feel rejuvenated with a fresh outlook on how to resolve things. Nevertheless you are bound to deal with whatever you left behind. I know vacations are necessary to maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle for yourself and the people that depend on you. When most people think of the word “vacation”, they associate it with traveling out of town or away from their usual surroundings. However, the definition of vacation states that it is a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel. The root word vacate, is to leave or go away; which gives us the understanding that vacations can be simplified and taken everyday by simply removing ourselves from the task at hand. Just living and functioning in our society today, where our culture has succumbed to increased levels of stress and pressure; it is necessary to find relief and restoration or you will get burnt out. In Social Work and other fields where you are providing services to people, we refer to it as self care. You need to be rejuvenated, in order to perform well on the job and handle personal responsibilities.
Maybe you have some unexpected expenses, or are experiencing a season of financial depletion, or living frugal to save for a future need or want; whatever the case maybe, you can still take a vacation without accumulating the same travel expenses as going somewhere out of town. According to the definition, wherever you go to find relief is a vacation. Over the weekend I’ve enjoyed a mini vacay within my residential city. With our already purchased season passes to Six Flags; my friend, children, and I all enjoyed a day at the amusement park. Our family has been to this theme park on numerous occasions, as this is our third year of having season passes. On this particular day, I had changed my mindset prior to entering the park. Instead of perceiving the park with the familiarity of past visits, I envisioned being a first time visitor or tourist. It made my day! I purposely went to shows I had not seen before, and rode on new rides, creating a whole new experience. Most importantly, I felt like I was on vacation. The following day I changed up my exercise routine. I decided to take a walk across the bridge, and it was so refreshing. Instead of focusing on the demand of physical fitness, I took in the scenery. I looked at the flowers, water, birds, all of the beautiful nature that surrounded me. It brought a sense of calmness and peace within me. That’s when I realized that it doesn’t take much to take a vacation. I don’t have to go too far to find relief. I was ready to start my week.
When I returned to my car, I came up with the concept of vacationing for a lifetime. Even when you travel onshore or offshore, there are always people working around you. If you are a tourist in their place of work, you can also be a tourist in your area as well. There are many places you may have never seen or visited within your city or state lines. You can even take a vacation in your own home and backyard. Just imagine making a tropical drink or a glass of lemonade and relaxing in your backyard. You might put a little umbrella in your cup, whatever floats your boat. Then for the evening you can create a spa in your bathroom. Put some aromatherapy products in your bathtub; and candles in safe areas to create the ambience that helps you feel like you are on vacation. As hard as you work, you should be able to put forth the effort in enjoying time away from work. The only thing you need is your imagination and a change of perspective to enjoy a vacation everyday of your life.
